The Belt System

"It's not who's good, it's who's left. It's hours on the mat. If you put in that time, natural athlete or not, you'll be a black belt. You're going to be somewhere in ten years, why not be a black belt? You just can't quit."

A Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is widely considered to be the most challenging earned rank in martial arts.  To date, Newfoundland has produced only four homegrown Black Belts. Attaining this level of skill requires an average of 10-15 years of practicing 3-4 nights week, and you have to show your apply your skills in sparing (rolling) with everyone. It is an incredibly difficult journey.

That being said, the ability level most newcomers expect a black belt to possess is usually possessed by experienced blue belts. Every Black Belt was once a day one white belt who realized that not only are they being handled by blue belts, but that those blue belts, regardless of age, size, or gender, are doing so easily. This process sets up the ego for the long hard journey forward
