Class Descriptions

Gi Classes

Traditional BJJ has its own rule set, governed by the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation (IBJJF), and incorporates many judo throws and control positions.

Participants wear traditional uniforms, Gis, to these classes. BJJ gis are made thicker than many other martial arts uniforms. This ensures that they will hold up against the rigours of grip fighting and not injure someone caught in a gi choke or control. While these uniforms may appear impractical, many find that they better simulate real situations that involve people wearing jeans and a hoodie.

No Gi Classes

Over the past decade, no gi has exploded in popularity in the BJJ community. We are now seeing it diverge more and more from traditional BJJ into something better thought of as "submission grappling," and is slowly developing its own ruleset.

Clothing usually consists of rash guards and either grappling shorts or spats. This subset of grappling is fast and athletic, as it is much harder to hold and control your opponent. Wrestling techniques dictate many of the grips and controls that are fundamental to this style of BJJ.
